The ranking underscores the substantial economic influence of these often discreet enterprises. Three businesses on the list are estimated to be worth over $100 billion. Koch Inc. tops the list with an estimated valuation of $185 billion. Following closely are Mars, valued at $121 billion, and Fidelity Investments, at $107 billion. The list spans diverse sectors, including grocery, food, financial services, and consumer goods, with companies operating across 16 states.

Koch Inc., formerly Koch Industries, is 84% family-owned by the families of Charles Koch and Julia Koch, and its brands include Brawny and Dixie cups. Mars, entirely family-owned, is recognized for confections like M&Ms and Milky Way bars, and recently acquired Kellanova. Fidelity Investments, with 49% ownership by the Johnson family, is a significant player in financial services. Publix supermarkets have 20% ownership by the Jenkins family, operating over 1,400 stores. Cargill, already America’s largest private company by revenue, is 88% owned by more than 100 family members.
