According to information released by the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education has received a total budget of ₹1,39,289.48 crore.
Of this:

  • The Department of School Education and Literacy has been allocated ₹83,562.26 crore
  • Department of Higher Education has been allocated ₹55,727.22 crore
  • This amount is higher than in previous years and will help in improving the education infrastructure.

The 18% GST will continue to apply to digital education, online courses, coaching institutes, and EdTech companies, as before. Students and the education sector had been demanding a reduction in this tax for a long time, but no changes were made to the GST rates in Budget 2026.

Employment in Budget 2026: New Schemes and Announcements for the Education Sector

Several new schemes have been announced in Budget 2026 to promote education and skill development:-

  • Bio-Pharma Shakti Mission will be launched over the next 5 years at a cost of ₹10,000 crore to make India a global bio-pharma hub.
  • 3 new NIPERs (National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research) will be established, and 7 existing institutions will be upgraded.
  • Skill development based on AI and youth empowerment will be promoted.
  • Ayush pharmacies will be modernised.
  • Veterinary and para-veterinary colleges will be opened to train 20,000 new veterinary professionals.
  • Emphasis will be placed on infrastructure development in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

  • Girls’ hostels will be set up in every district of the country.
  • Emergency and trauma care facilities in district hospitals will be upgraded, increasing capacity by 50%.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that a permanent high-level committee will be formed to link education with employment and entrepreneurship. This committee will focus on skills related to the service sector, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. The government aims to make India a leader in the global service sector with a 10% share by 2047. Additionally, there is a proposal to develop 5 university townships near major industrial areas and to upgrade AYUSH and drug testing laboratories.
