Defence Budget 2026: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27 in Parliament. The budget allocates ₹7.85 lakh crore to the Ministry of Defence, including a capital budget of ₹2.19 lakh crore. Last year, in 2025-26, the defence budget was ₹6.81 lakh crore, with a capital budget of ₹1.80 lakh crore. This year’s 15% increase is the largest in the last ten years and will be spent on weapons and modernisation for the three armed forces (Army, Air Force, and Navy), keeping in mind Operation Sindoor and border security.

The increased budget will accelerate several major projects for the armed forces. The Navy plans to purchase additional Rafale-M fighter jets, while six new stealth submarines will be built under Project 75L. These submarines will incorporate advanced AIP technology, allowing them to remain submerged for extended periods. This will strengthen India’s maritime and air security and boost the country’s military preparedness.

Finance Minister announced the establishment of special Rare Earth Corridors in mineral-rich states such as Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. This corridor will cover the entire value chain of mining, processing, research, and advanced manufacturing. The government aims to reduce the country’s import dependence and enhance national security and industrial capacity.
