Canada and Norway have established a significant cross-Atlantic alliance focused on advancing marine and clean technologies. This collaboration is a formal partnership between AKA Energy Systems, based in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and the Sustainable Energy Katapult Centre in Stord, Norway. The initiative will operate under the unified brand “Sustainable Energy Canada,” aiming to create a globally recognized platform for the testing, validation, prototyping, and development of marine and clean technologies. This alliance is designed to serve both countries by attracting international industry and fostering innovation.
Leveraging Expertise Across the Atlantic
The partnership leverages Norway’s established leadership in maritime innovation, including its robust testing and innovation ecosystem for hydrogen propulsion, hybrid electric vessels, and clean fuel systems. Canada, through AKA’s Poole’s Corner campus, is developing equivalent infrastructure on its Atlantic coast. This collaboration will create a vital cross-Atlantic corridor, enabling technologies developed or validated in Norway to be certified and commercialized in North American markets via Prince Edward Island, and vice versa. This infrastructure supports national industrial strategies in both countries, particularly in accelerating the decarbonization of maritime fleets, expanding domestic defense capabilities, and growing export-competitive clean technology industries.
A Global Platform for Innovation
Sustainable Energy Canada will serve as the market-facing identity for joint services, attracting clean technology companies seeking North American market entry, supporting Norwegian firms expanding to Canada, and providing Canadian innovators with access to European expertise and networks. The platform will offer independent testing and validation services for marine and clean energy technologies, rapid prototyping support, and pathways for market entry in both North America and Europe. It will also facilitate joint participation in government-supported R&D programs, innovation funding, and industrial-academic programming, connecting institutions across the Atlantic.
