U.S. tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico will be halted for 30 days, as President Donald Trump said he secured new commitments from both countries to improve border security. Before the tariffs came into effect on Tuesday, Trump said he had spoken to his counterparts in Mexico and Canada, after which the tariffs were halted.

On Saturday, Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and an additional 10 per cent on goods from China. Over the course of a month, Trump said he wanted to negotiate an even better deal with both Canada and Mexico, which he has accused of not doing enough to crack down on fentanyl smuggling and illegal migration.

"It is my responsibility as president to ensure the safety and security of all Americans, and I'm doing just that." I'm very pleased with this early result," Trump said on his Truth social platform after speaking with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau said in a post on The X that he had a good conversation with Trump. The prime minister announced a 1.3 billion Canadian dollar ($901 million) plan to improve border security. "I just had a good conversation with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan – strengthening the border with new helicopters, technology and personnel, better coordination with our U.S. partners, and increasing resources to stem the flow of fentanyl. Around 10,000 frontline personnel are working and will work on border security," he said.

"Canada is making new commitments to appoint fentanyl tsars, we will list cartels as terrorists, we will patrol the border around the clock, we will launch a Canada-US Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering," Trudeau said. I've also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will support it with $200 million. "As long as we work together, the proposed tariffs will be put on hold for at least 30 days." "

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said in a post on Ex that the U.S. is holding tariffs for a month from now. Sheinbaum said his country would send 10,000 troops to its northern border as part of efforts to curb drug trafficking. He said his agreement with Trump includes a commitment by his administration to stop the smuggling of high-powered weapons into Mexico.
