US President-elect Donald Trump has ignited debate by showing interest in acquiring Greenland, Canada, and the Panama Canal through a series of social media posts, referencing national security and economic advantages. His remarks were met with strong disapproval from the leaders of Denmark and Panama.
In a recent social media update, Eric Trump, Donald Trump's son, shared a picture depicting Trump purchasing Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal, accompanied by the caption 'we are back.' Trump recently showed interest in Greenland, stating that American ownership and control of the region are essential for national security and global freedom.
"The United States believes that possessing and governing Greenland is essential to maintaining national security and global freedom," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. In response to Trump's comments about Greenland, Rasmus Jarlov, a member of Denmark's opposition Conservative Party, stated that 'dictators' pose a threat by attempting to seize the territories of other nations.
Sharing a post on X, Jarlov wrote, "Not sure whether it is a joke or not. But certainly not funny. One week Canada is threatened. Now Denmark. Greenland is Danish. It has been since 1380 and it will continue to be. This is undisputed, signed in rock in treaties and not open for negotiation. At all. Dictators threaten to take control over other countries' territory. Free democratic countries do not."
On Monday, Trump posted an enigmatic statement about the Panama Canal on Truth Social. He shared a photo of the American flag flying over the canal, echoing his warning to Panama that they would not permit the canal to fall into 'wrong hands.'
The Panama Canal is a man-made 82-kilometer (51-mile) waterway in Panama that links the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, traversing the Isthmus of Panama and serving as a passage for maritime trade.
It is to be noted that the Panama Canal is regarded as a vital national asset for the United States due to its significant impact on the country's economy and national security.
