Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have claimed the lives of dozens, including 29 people in a deadly assault that flattened a multi-story residential building in the crowded Basta neighborhood of central Beirut.
According to the IDF, the Israeli Air Force struck 12 Hezbollah command centers in Dahieh, Beirut, including locations used by Hezbollah's intelligence unit and Unit 4400. The IDF stated that these command centers are employed to plan, direct, and execute terrorist attacks against Israel, as well as to conduct surveillance.
On Sunday, Lebanon's Health Ministry clarified the death toll, initially reporting 20 fatalities before confirming a higher number. Rescuers continued their efforts late into the night as the full extent of the tragedy caused by the Israeli airstrike became evident.
The Beirut airstrike is part of a series of airstrikes conducted across Lebanon, as Israel has persisted with its military campaign against Hezbollah despite attempts to implement a ceasefire. The IDF has confirmed that its strikes in Beirut's southern suburbs were aimed at Hezbollah positions.
According to CNN, the attack in Basta highlights a rise in Israeli airstrikes on central Beirut, following a similar strike last Sunday that resulted in the death of a Hezbollah spokesman.
Israeli airstrikes have also hit the Baalbek-Harmel region in eastern Lebanon, with an attack on Schmeister resulting in the deaths of at least 13 people, including four children. Since September, Israeli airstrikes have killed multiple Hezbollah commanders and struck vital infrastructure, leading to extensive destruction in southern Lebanon.
The United Nations reports that the conflict has caused significant damage to Lebanon, resulting in over 3,000 fatalities and displacing more than a million people.
