US President-elect: US President-elect Donald Trump has picked Florida Representative Mike Waltz as his national security adviser, Reuters reported on Monday, citing sources.
Waltz, a former Army Green Beret and China's leading critic, has criticized his activities in the Asia-Pacific. He also stressed the need for the US to be prepared for a potential conflict in the region. He will be responsible for briefing Trump on key national security issues and coordinating with various agencies, Reuters said.
"Previously, while criticizing the Biden administration for its disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, Waltz publicly praised Trump's foreign policy views," Waltz said during an event earlier this year. "Disruptors are often not good ... Clearly our national security establishment and certainly a lot of people immersed in bad old habits at the Pentagon need that disruption.
"Donald Trump is the same disruptor. Waltz has a long history in Washington's political circles. Earlier on Monday, Trump nominated Republican Representative Alice Stefanik to serve as the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, CNN reported. Trump praised Stefanic in a statement, calling him "an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter." According to CNN, Trump said in a statement, "I am proud to nominate Chairman Alice Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations." Notably, Congresswoman Alice Stefanik is the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference and the most senior Republican in New York, as reported on Stefanick's official website.
At the time of her first election in 2014, Stefanic was the youngest woman elected to Congress in U.S. history. Trump has also appointed Tom Homan, a former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in his previous administration, who will be in charge of the nation's borders. Remarkably, in a historic political comeback, Trump won a second term as President of the United States after securing 295 electoral votes in the 2024 presidential election, defeating Democratic rival Kamala Harris, who garnered 226 votes. This makes Trump the first U.S. president since 1892 to return to office after losing the last election. Trump's return to the White House marks only the second time in US history that a president has served two non-consecutive terms. The first such instance was that of Grover Cleveland, who served as president in 1884 and 1892. Trump previously served as the US President from 2016 to 2020.
