Google has launched Air View+, an ecosystem-centric solution aimed at assisting government officials and the public in accessing hyperlocal air quality data. This feature has been introduced amidst the alarming rise in air pollution levels in Delhi-NCR.
Although air pollution poses major health challenges, the ability to respond to hyper local levels has been limited due to incomplete data on air quality.
Air View+ by Google aims to address this challenge by collaborating with local climate tech firms and local organisations, including local sustainable startups, researchers/climate action groups, corporations, city administrators, and citizens.
In its blog, Google said that climate tech firms such as Aurassure and Respirer Living Sciences have played a key role in setting up air quality sensor networks in cities that previously lacked the requisite infrastructure to monitor air quality.
According to Google, these sensors measure temperature and humidity as well as air quality parameters such as PM2.5, PM10, CO2, NO2, Ozone, and VOCs, and take measurements every minute.
These sensors have been installed in static locations in more than 150 Indian cities such as administrative installations, utility poles, commercial buildings etc. and will continuously monitor the air quality.
Google has said that these sensors have been rigorously validated and calibrated in collaboration with local researchers from climate action groups like IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, state pollution boards, and CSTEP.
Google said the data has been analyzed by researchers and sustainability startups using Google AI to quickly and extensively compute information useful to people.
Air View+, powered by Google AI, provides real-time hyperlocal air quality information in Google Maps for users across India and provides valuable air quality information to government agencies responsible for environmental monitoring and urban planning.
Users can now get hyperlocal air quality information across India using Google Maps. Google achieved this by using a multi-level AI fusion approach that brings together data from various input sources such as sensor networks, government data, satellite imagery, weather and wind patterns, traffic conditions, land cover, and more.
For AQI insights on Google Maps, select the Air Quality layer from the Layers button on the home screen and tap any location on the map. They can click on the weather widget on the Explore tab on the home screen on AQI Insights from their current location.
