Apple has launched a new feature called "Share Item Location" aimed at improving the tracking and retrieval of lost items.
Currently available in the iOS 18.2 public beta and set to be offered as a free update for iPhone Xs and newer models, this feature enables users to securely share the location of AirTags or other Find My network devices with third parties, such as airlines. The feature is designed to provide a more efficient solution for recovering misplaced items, especially when traveling.
How Will This Feature Work?
With the Share Item Location feature, users can create a shareable link within the Find My app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The recipient of the link can view the item's real-time location on an interactive map, with updates and timestamps reflecting its movement.
Once the item is recovered, the shared location is automatically deactivated, and the owner can disable it at any time. To ensure privacy and security, the shared link expires after seven days.
Apple Partners with Airlines to Track Lost Luggage
Apple's latest feature is designed to help travelers track down lost luggage, addressing a common issue for airline passengers. In partnership with over 15 major airlines, including Delta, United, British Airways, and Singapore Airlines, Apple has incorporated Share Item Location into their customer service systems. By the end of 2024, these airlines aim to integrate Find My location data to assist in locating delayed or mishandled baggage, with more airlines expected to adopt the feature in the future.
The Share Item Location feature operates within the privacy framework of Apple's Find My network, which is designed with end-to-end encryption and ensures user anonymity.
Apple is enhancing baggage management by allowing authorized airline staff to track lost items via Share Item Location, ensuring data security. This feature will be integrated into SITA's WorldTracer system, used by over 500 airlines globally, to help reunite travelers with their luggage more efficiently, providing added peace of mind.
