Assam's Dhubri district faces escalating violence as CM Himanta Biswa Sarma issues a shoot-at-sight order after communal clashes result in deaths and injuries.

The move aims to restore order amid tensions fueled by alleged desecration and internet rumors. Security forces, including RAF, are deployed as opposition criticizes the government's delayed response.

Dhubri (Assam): In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing unrest in Dhubri district, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a shoot-at-sight order to security forces, following days of intense communal tension and violent clashes. The directive came late Friday night after repeated appeals for calm failed to stem the violence that has engulfed parts of the district.

At least three of all people have reportedly died, and more than two hundred have been injured in lapidation incidents, arson, and clashes between rival groups. Speaking at a press briefing in Guwahati, CM Sarma said, “The government will not tolerate lawlessness. I have directed the administration to take all necessary steps to restore peace — including shoot-at-sight orders in the most volatile areas, if provoked.”

Conflict Began After Alleged Incident - The unrest began earlier this week following a controversial incident involving alleged desecration at a place of worship, which quickly spiraled into protests and retaliatory violence.

The situation excerbate after rumors spread on the internet, prompt the district associations to suspend internet services and thrust Section 144 across Dhubri. Security has been step up with additional paramilitary forces deployed, including Rapid Action Force (RAF) contingents. A curfew remains in place in several pockets, and drone surveillance is being used to monitor crowds.

Political Implication and Community Sentiment - Opposition leaders have condemned the violence but also criticized the state government’s “delayed response.” Meanwhile, community leaders and civil society groups have appealed for calm and urged residents not to fall prey to misinformation. “The shoot-at-sight order is a serious step. The government must ensure it is implemented judiciously,” said human rights activist Sanjay Hazarika. “Restoring peace should come with efforts at reconciliation, not just force.”

Looking forward - As the situation remains tense, the Chief Minister has called an emergency all-party meeting and urged religious leaders to play a constructive role in pacifying the community. The administration has assured that compensation will be provided to the families of the deceased and injured, and that a judicial inquiry will be launched into the incident that triggered the unrest.
