Rajya Sabha Elections: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the name of Kanad Purkayastha as its candidate from Assam for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election. His name has been approved by the central leadership, the party said in its official list.

Earlier, the Assam BJP unit had prepared a list of names of 13 senior leaders and sent them to the party's central leadership, naming them for the Rajya Sabha polls. Among these names was Kanad Purkayastha, who is currently serving as the secretary of the state BJP. Eventually, the final stamp was put on his name.

Rajya Sabha elections will be held on two seats in the state.

Two Rajya Sabha seats will go to polls in Assam this time. The BJP will contest one of these seats and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on the other. Due to the majority of both the parties in the state assembly, they are almost certain to win the election.

Election Date

Polling for these two Rajya Sabha seats will be held on June 19, 2025. The results will be announced on the same day after the counting of votes. The notification was issued by the EC on June 2 and the last date for filing nominations is June 9.

Why is there an election?

The elections were necessitated by the expiry of the terms of Rajya Sabha members Ranjan Das (BJP) and Birendra Prasad Baishya (AGP). At present, there are a total of seven Rajya Sabha seats from Assam, out of which six are occupied by the NDA. BJP has 4 seats, UPPL has 1 and AGP has 1 seat. The remaining one seat is held by an independent candidate.

Guidelines for Voting

The Election Commission has issued special guidelines to ensure transparency of voting. Voters will be able to vote only with a purple coloured sketch pen provided by the Returning Officer. Use of any other pen or stationery will be strictly prohibited. Also, observers will be appointed to supervise the entire election process.

Precautions related to COVID-19 will be ensured during the election. Rules like masks, sanitizers and social distance will be strictly followed at polling stations.
