On Friday, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced that the three new criminal laws will be implemented in the state by February 28.
Speaking at the press conference, CM Saini said, "The discussion has taken place, and we are progressing rapidly. Haryana will soon implement three criminal laws, with the process expected to be finalized by February 28."
These regulations include the Indian Judicial Code (BNS), 2023, the Indian Civil Defence Code (BNSS), 2023, and the Indian Evidence Act (BSA), 2023. The measures were put into effect on July 1, 2024, with the goal of improving the transparency, efficiency, and flexibility of the legal system to address contemporary societal needs.
As a result, Haryana will be the first state to completely adopt the new criminal laws, following Chandigarh as the second. Previously, Amit Shah praised Chandigarh for fully enacting the laws.
During an event to introduce three new criminal laws, Shah described it as a 'golden day' for India's criminal justice system. He said, "Today is a golden day for the Indian criminal justice system as today Chandigarh has become the first entity to fully implement all the three new criminal laws."
The police, prisons, judiciary, prosecution, and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) are all actively working to fully enforce the new laws. He mentioned that the old criminal laws, such as the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Evidence Act, were designed solely for the protection of the British.
"The earlier laws were 160 years old — they were made in the British Parliament, they were not for the people but for the protection of British rule," he said.
