On Wednesday, the Punjab branch of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) revealed its candidate list for the forthcoming municipal elections in Punjab. The party has named 94 candidates for the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, 56 for Patiala, and 74 for the Amritsar Municipal Corporation.
The AAP has revealed its candidates for municipal councils in various areas including Amloh, Bagha Purana, Machhiwara, Sardulgarh, Rampura Phul, Narot Jaimal Singh Nagar, Khem Karan Nagar, Sahnewal, Phagwara, Mahilpur, Shahkot, Goraya, and Ghagga.
The Punjab Election Commission declared on December 9 that elections for municipal corporations, councils, and nagar panchayats (urban civic bodies) in Punjab are scheduled for December 21.
During a press conference, State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhary stated that the model code of conduct is currently active in the relevant regions, and all essential preparations have been completed to guarantee free, fair, and peaceful elections.
He announced that voting would occur from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm on December 21, with vote counting commencing right after the polling concludes at the respective polling stations.
State Election Commissioner Chaudhary also outlined the election schedule:
Nominations will begin on December 9 and close on December 12, scrutiny will be completed on December 13 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is December 14. The polling will cover 381 wards of municipal corporations and 598 wards of municipal councils and nagar panchayats, he said.
The definitive voter lists for the municipal elections were released on December 7, and copies can be obtained from the respective registration officers (SDMs) and other pertinent offices.
Candidates running in the municipal elections have a spending cap of Rs 4 lakh, while those in Municipal Council Class I have a limit of Rs 3.6 lakh, Municipal Council Class II candidates have a cap of Rs 2.3 lakh, and Municipal Council Class III candidates have a limit of Rs 2 lakh. Additionally, the spending limit for Nagar Panchayat elections is set at Rs 1.4 lakh, he stated.
