Thick Smog Engulfs Delhi as AQI Stays 'Poor'

Visibility Drops in Delhi as Smog Blankets the City

On Tuesday, the air quality in the national capital stayed in the 'poor' range, with thick smog covering certain areas and reducing visibility. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an AQI of 224 at 8 am for the national capital. Some regions in the city registered a poor AQI.

At 8 a.m., the AQI readings were 254 at ITO, 214 at Alipore, 216 at Chandni Chowk, and 203 at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.Nevertheless, certain regions experienced improved air quality within the 'moderate' range, with DTU at 169, Lodhi Road at 123, and Najafgarh at 142. In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, the AQI stood at 256.

An AQI ranging from 0-50 is deemed good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is poor, 301-400 is very poor, and 401-500 is severe. The air quality in the national capital was deemed 'poor' on Monday, with some regions shrouded in thick smog, impairing visibility. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s AQI stood at 231 as of 8 am on Monday.

The AQI levels were 239 in Alipur, 276 in Anandpur, 254 in Ashok Vihar, 280 in Bawana, 220 in Burari Crossing, 152 in CRRI Mathura Road, 196 in DTU, 291 in Dwarka Sector 8, 242 in ITO, 154 in Lodhi Road, 315 in Mundka, 249 in Narela, 209 in North Campus, 170 in Pusa, and 230 in Vivek Vihar.

Previously, the Supreme Court had permitted the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to ease the GRAP Stage IV restrictions in Delhi-NCR to GRAP Stage II due to the improvement in the Air Quality Index (AQI).

The Supreme Court enforces GRAP IV in Delhi

Just hours after the Supreme Court permitted the easing of GRAP Phase IV restrictions to Phase II in Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) revoked Phases IV and III of GRAP in the area. Nevertheless, Phases II and I of GRAP will continue to be enforced across the NCR.
