IndiGo Warns Passengers of Flight Disruptions in Chennai

IndiGo Airlines has issued a travel advisory regarding disruption in flights to and from Chennai, Tuticorin, and Madurai, which are affected due to adverse weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department reports that a deep depression has developed in the southwest Bay of Bengal over the past few hours and is moving northwards at a speed of 10 kmph.

At 23:30 IST on Tuesday, it was positioned in the same area near latitude 7.5 degrees north and longitude 82.6 degrees east, roughly 190 km southeast of Trincomalee, 470 km southeast of Nagapattinam, 580 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 670 km south-southeast of Chennai..

The Cyclonic Storm Likely To Intensify

It is highly likely that the system will move north-northwest and intensify into a cyclonic storm by Wednesday. Afterward, it will continue its north-northwestward trajectory towards the Tamil Nadu coast, reaching the Sri Lanka coast in the next two days.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai reported on Tuesday that the depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a deep depression. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall in the region, with sporadic heavy showers expected until Thursday (November 28).

S. Balachandran, the director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, told ANI that the pressure system expected tomorrow is likely to strengthen into a deep depression. There is a high likelihood that it will further intensify into a cyclonic storm and move northwards toward the Tamil Nadu coast.

IMD Issues Multiple Weather Alerts for Tamil Nadu

The IMD has issued multiple weather alerts for Tamil Nadu. A red alert for extremely heavy rainfall has been declared for three central districts on November 26 and for two districts on November 27.

Chennai will be under a yellow alert for heavy rains from November 27 to 29. Nearby districts such as Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet will experience yellow and orange alerts from November 27 to 30.

Light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning are expected at isolated locations across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on November 27. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely at a few places in these regions on November 28.
