Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the security situation in Manipur following reports of fresh violence in the state during a meeting with senior officials in Delhi. He is also set to hold a detailed discussion with officials today at 12 PM.
The development follows the imposition of a curfew in Imphal West and East, along with the suspension of internet services in seven districts, in response to fresh protests in the Valley districts over the killing of six individuals. Their bodies were discovered in Jiribam after reportedly being abducted by alleged Kuki militants.
A curfew was enforced after mobs attacked the homes of several MLAs, causing significant property damage.
In Jiribam district, three women and three children residing in a relief camp went missing following a gunfight between security forces and militants on Monday. Meitei organizations have claimed that militants abducted the missing individuals.
On November 11, militants launched an attack on a police station in the Borobekra area. Security forces successfully repelled the assault, killing 11 militants. During their retreat, the militants allegedly abducted three women and three children from the same family, who were staying at a relief camp near the police station.
The bodies of individuals kidnapped by militants were discovered following an extensive operation to locate them.
Meanwhile, Amit Shah's review of Manipur's security situation coincides with the Conrad Sangma-led National People's Party (NPP) withdrawing its support from the BJP-led government in the state.
In an official letter addressed to BJP national president JP Nadda, the NPP criticized the Manipur government, led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, for its failure to control ethnic violence and restore peace in the region.
The NPP has withdrawn the support of its seven MLAs, but this move is unlikely to impact the BJP-led government in Manipur. In the 60-member assembly, the BJP holds a clear majority with 37 MLAs. Additionally, the party has the backing of its allies, including the Naga People's Front (NPF) with 5 MLAs, one JD(U) MLA, and three Independents.
