The whole country is keeping an eye on who will be the new president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The tenure of the current president, Roger Binny, has ended, and at present, vice-president Rajiv Shukla is handling this responsibility on an interim basis. But the picture will become clear with the BCCI elections to be held at the end of September. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on 28 September. This meeting is held every year, but this time the agenda is very important because new faces are to be elected to big posts like president, vice-president, secretary, joint secretary, and treasurer. The board has already made it clear that new office bearers will be elected in this meeting, and all the state cricket associations will participate in it and vote.
Meanwhile, the name of former Team India veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is also in the news. In fact, the Punjab Cricket Association has appointed him as its representative in this AGM. In such a situation, it is being speculated that Harbhajan may come forward not only as a representative but also as a contender for a big post. If this happens, it will be the third consecutive time when a former cricketer will take up a big responsibility in BCCI. Earlier in 2019, Sourav Ganguly made history by assuming the post of president. He became the first former cricketer to become BCCI president. After him, 1983 World Cup-winning all-rounder Roger Binny reached this chair.
Now all eyes are on whether BCCI will carry forward this tradition and appoint another former cricketer to the top post. Recently, Sachin Tendulkar's name also cropped up among the potential candidates, but it turned out to be just a rumor. At the moment, the biggest discussion is whether Harbhajan Singh will become the next big face in the Board of Control for Cricket in India. His administrative experience is limited, but his stature on the field and understanding of cricket can make him a serious contender in this race.
