Ravi Shastri Urges Gautam Gambhir To Calls For Tough Stance On Repeat Errors By Indian Team

Gambhir Urged to Address Fielding Lapses After Test Defeat

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri took the Indian Test team to different heights of success with his captain Virat Kohli, and the same thing is expected from the young Indian team with head coach Gautam Gambhir. Shastri now wants the team's head coach, Gambhir, to take strict action after losing the first test at Headingley against England. While talking in an interview, Shastri said that Gambhir should point out those players of the team who are repeating the same mistakes again and again and make them realize their mistake. He even said that if the need arises, he should even scold the players.

Team India faced a lot of misfielding in the first test; almost more than 5 catches were dropped in just a single innings. The player who was highlighted the most in dropping catches was Yashasvi Jaiswal. England batsmen took full advantage of all these opportunities to gain the whole momentum. The problem does not end here. After dominating the batting in both innings, India's lower middle order scattered like cards in both innings, which helped England a lot to bounce back in the game.

Talking about these things, Shastri said,

"I think the coaching staff has a big role in this. Take the positives out of the contest. As a captain, he (Shubman Gill) has done more than what was expected of him. He scored a century; there were five centuries scored in the game. If anything, you want the basics to be done better. There are certain things that are out of his control."

Further, he said,

"Dropping catches is not in his control. That is where the team can work hard as a unit and get better. Similarly, when you come out to bat, you have to put a price on your wicket. You can't get into a situation where you can score 550-600 runs by being timid and humble."

Shastri also pointed out Gambhir stating,

"These are the areas where you have to be tough at times as a coach, really tough in the dressing room. There are some things where you upset some people. But there were a lot of positives in this test."

On day 5, Jaiswal dropped the catch of in-form Ben Duckett just before he was on his hundred, and the opener made use of the opportunity to score a brilliant 149 and take England close to victory. During the day, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant also missed several chances to dismiss Ben Stokes and Joe Root off Ravindra Jadeja.
