Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Marsh has been injured due to which he is unlikely to play this season. His stint with Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL is also in doubt at the moment. Marsh also lost his place for the last match against India at the SCG and was replaced by Beau Webster. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Marsh scored 73 runs in seven innings and played a limited role with the ball. His fitness was the talk of the town during the BGT.
After the Test series against India, Marsh had only played one match of the BBL and took rest from the last three matches of the BBL season to be mentally and physically refreshed before the mega event ICC Champions Trophy. But his back problem remained serious and the selectors ruled him out of the tournament.
The CA statement reads,
"Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC Men's Champions Trophy due to lower back pain and dysfunction. "
In the absence of Marsh, who is Australia's T20I captain and also took charge of the ODI team in place of Pat Cummins, the team management needs to change the plans of the top order. Jake Fraser-McGurk could be a possible replacement. Although his recent performance has not been anything special, he can bat explosively in the top order.
Pat Cummins is also in doubt for playing in the Champions Trophy as he suffered the injury during the BGT series against India. With Marsh now out, Australia may need another captain. Steve Smith is currently leading Australia in the ongoing Test series in Sri Lanka. Travis Head has captained in T20Is but has not captained the team in ODIs so far. Australia's team management will look at a lot of options and then take a decision.
