Masik Shivratri has special significance in Hinduism. On this Shivratri, people worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This Masik Shivratri fast is observed on Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha every month. It is believed that on this day Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Linga and laid the foundation of the universe. After that, Lord Vishnu and Brahma first worshiped him, so it is also called the manifestation day of Lord Shiva. On this occasion, all the devotees worship the Shivling and chant the name of Lord Shiva in Jagran throughout the night.

Worship and major rituals

-Bathe in the morning and put on fresh clothes.
-Offer water to the Sun God and sprinkle Ganga water in the house.
-Go to the temple and offer milk, water, Bel leaves, Dhatura and incense sticks on the Shivling.
-Light a ghee lamp and chant Shiva-Parvati mantras.
-Perform special worship during Nishita Kaal and do Ratri Jagran and do Bhajan-Kirtan.

Masik Shivratri 2025 August Fasting Rules

Hindu scriptures suggest that fasting on Masik Shivratri brings Lord Shiva's blessings, fulfilling all life desires. This practice has been upheld by deities and revered figures since ancient times. It is believed that goddesses like Lakshmi, Indrani, Saraswati, Gayatri, Savitri, Sita, Parvati, and Rati also kept the Shivratri fast. Married women fast for their husbands' longevity and a joyful marriage, while unmarried girls fast to wish for a suitable groom and a blissful married life.

1. Devotees can choose from complete fasting (nirjala), partial fasting with fruits and milk, or fasting with satvik food.

2. Cereals, pulses and non-vegetarian foods such as onion, garlic and spices are generally avoided.

3. Fruits, milk, nuts and light satvik food (if complete fast is not being observed) are allowed.

4. Get up early, take a bath and wear clean clothes.

5. Take a pledge to observe the fast with full devotion and commitment.

6. Take bath and visit temple before evening prayer.

7. The fast is broken the next day after taking a bath, ideally before the Chaturdashi tithi ends.

8. Pray, chant mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya” and meditate.

9. Avoid negativity, anger, harsh words and sleeping during night vigil.
