On this occasion, they honor Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, seeking blessings for a joyful married life and a suitable life partner. In 2025, Hartalika Teej will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 26. This festival occurs on the Tritiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada.

Hartalika Teej holds importance due to the sacred union of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Women observe this day by worshipping temporary sand idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, fasting, and praying for a joyful married life. It is said that on this day, Goddess Parvati undertook intense penance to have Lord Shiva as her spouse.

The term 'Hartalika' is derived from two components: 'harat,' which signifies abduction, and 'aalika,' which means friend. According to legend, Goddess Parvati's friends abducted her and concealed her in the forest to prevent her father from marrying her off to Lord Vishnu. In the forest, Goddess Parvati undertook intense penance and ultimately succeeded in marrying Lord Shiva.

Hartalika Teej 2025: Hartalika Teej fasting method?

  • On this day, women rise early, bathe, and observe a fast.

  • They worship idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati made of sand.

  • Women wear new clothes and make up.

  • The fast story is heard and narrated.

  • After fasting the whole day, the story and puja are performed at night.

  • In this fast, even water is not consumed, it is also called Nirjala fast.

Hartalika Teej 2025: Types of Teej

Apart from Hartalika Teej, two other Teej festivals are celebrated:

  • Hariyali Teej – Celebrated in the month of Sawan.

  • Kajari Teej – falls in the dark fortnight of Bhadrapad.

  • Hartalika Teej – Celebrated on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya and it falls a month after Hariyali Teej.
