The Z-MORH tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir is enhancing tourism in the Sonamarg region of Ganderbal district, providing year-round connectivity and improving local livelihoods. Constructed at an expense of Rs 2,717 crore, the 11.98 km tunnel in Sonamarg has significantly improved connectivity and stimulated economic growth in the area.
The Z-MORH tunnel has transformed Sonamarg into a year-round tourist spot, providing economic benefits to the residents. A local vendor stated that the tunnel has enabled them to earn year-round, whereas before, they had no income for the first half of the year.
As the number of tourists from Srinagar and Ganderbal rises, Sonamarg is now accessible during winter, boosting employment and business opportunities in the area.
"Because of the tunnel, we can earn money throughout the year," said a local vendor. He stated, "Previously, we would stay at home for six months. Now, everyone is finding job opportunities. People are arriving from Srinagar and Ganderbal. The tourism department used to take down the Sonamarg board in November, but now Sonamarg is accessible all year round. We welcome all tourists and are prepared to host them."
On January 13, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-MORH tunnel project in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, accompanied by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, J&K LG Manoj Sinha, and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari praised the opening of the Sonamarg tunnel, describing it as an 'engineering marvel' that guarantees all-season connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh. The Z-MORH tunnel has been built to enhance tourism by transforming Sonamarg into an all-season destination, promoting winter tourism, adventure sports, and supporting local livelihoods.
