Millions of devotees have participated in the holy dip at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025. According to the Uttar Pradesh Information Department, by 8 am on Thursday, more than 4.511 million pilgrims had attended the Maha Kumbh. More than 1 million Kalpvasis are currently at the Sangam, and over 5.511 million devotees took the holy dip at the Sangam on Thursday morning.
As of January 29, the total number of devotees who have bathed at the holy Sangam since the start of the Maha Kumbh has surpassed 270 million on the occasion of 'Mauni Amavasya'. The officials have enhanced preparations to guarantee efficient crowd control and uninterrupted services for the worshippers.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Kumbh Mela, Vaibhav Krishna, reported that a stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on Wednesday resulted in at least 30 fatalities and 60 injuries. He mentioned that 25 of the bodies have been identified.
The event occurred as hundreds of thousands of worshippers assembled at the meeting point of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers for a sacred bath on the significant day of Mauni Amavasya, which is also the second royal bath day.
The Uttar Pradesh administration has declared financial aid of Rs 25 lakh for the victims' families, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has called for a judicial investigation.
Meanwhile, the judicial commission, consisting of three members, will be led by Justice Harsh Kumar, former Director General VK Gupta, and retired IAS officer DK Singh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his sympathies to the pilgrims who lost their loved ones in the incident. The PM said, "The accident at Prayagraj Mahakumbh is deeply saddening. My heartfelt condolences go out to the pilgrims who have lost their loved ones. I also wish for the swift recovery of all those injured."
