Sanjay Roy, a principal accused in the tragic RG Kar rape and murder case, has been pronounced guilty, for which he is pronounced for life imprisonment along with fine of Rs. 50,000 by the Sealdah court.
In anticipation, security around the court and even neighboring areas has increased in view of a huge number of law enforcement personnel, two deputy commissioners of Kolkata Police, five assistant commissioners, 14 inspectors, 31 sub-inspectors, 39 assistant sub-inspectors, 299 constables, and 80 women officers.
On Monday morning, BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya expressed concerns over the hurry in the case proceedings. He pointed out the rush to progress with the trial and stressed the fact that the case required deeper investigations.
According to him, the punishment meted out must be equally severe for those involved in the offense as well. "We believe Sanjay Roy's confession should be given due consideration. It's for the court to decide on the punishment, but why the haste? Abhishek Banerjee, on day one, said Roy should be shot or hanged immediately. Justice shouldn't be hurried," Bhattacharya said to Agency.
He argued that the court should allow Roy to present any further details he might have, as many people have doubts and concerns about potential evidence being destroyed in the case. Bhattacharya called for a more thorough examination.
Citing the involvement of more than one person in the crime, CPI(M) West Bengal State Secretary Md Salim also spoke about the case. He criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for not taking it forward and termed the central agencies as mere puppets that only echoed the words of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Salim said that the fight for justice will go on till the victim's family gets justice.
The case revolves around the ghastly rape and murder of a trainee doctor, whose body was found on August 9 in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The case had sparked widespread outrage and protests across the country.
Roy, who was working as a civic volunteer at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the crime. The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court declared him guilty on Saturday citing multiple charges against him, which include assault and murder. According to the court, Roy had entered the seminar room where the doctor was resting, assaulted, and killed her.
