The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) estimates that the Mahakumbh 2025, which commenced today in Prayagraj, will generate approximately Rs 2 lakh crore in trade within the sector.
The month-long event, touted as the world's largest human gathering, is expected to attract nearly 400 million devotees, boosting local business, tourism, and employment opportunities.
According to the trade body, the accommodation and tourism sectors are anticipated to be the largest contributors to this economic surge, with an estimated Rs 40,000 crore expected to come from local hotels, guesthouses, and temporary lodging options.
The Mahakumbh will witness extensive economic and business activities. It is estimated that with an average spending of Rs 5,000 per person on a religious pilgrimage, the total expenditure will exceed Rs 2 lakh crore.
This encompasses spending on hotels, guesthouses, short-term lodging, food, religious goods, healthcare, and various other services. The food and beverage industry, encompassing packaged food, water, biscuits, juices, and other food items, is projected to contribute Rs 20,000 crore to the overall trade.
Religious items and offerings, such as oil, lamps, Ganga water, idols, incense sticks, and religious books, constitute another major economic sector, contributing approximately Rs 20,000 crore. The transport and logistics industry, which includes local and interstate services, freight, and taxis, is expected to generate Rs 10,000 crore.
Tourism services, including tour guides, travel packages, and related activities, are expected to generate Rs 10,000 crore. Temporary medical camps, along with ayurvedic products and medicines, are projected to bring in Rs 3,000 crore, whereas industries such as e-ticketing, digital payments, Wi-Fi services, and mobile charging stations are anticipated to achieve a turnover of Rs 1,000 crore.
The entertainment and media industry, encompassing advertising and publicity efforts, is valued at Rs 10,000 crore. The Uttar Pradesh government has emphasized the significance of Mahakumbh in enhancing the local economy and promoting tourism on an international scale.
Events of this magnitude not only boost local industries but also aid in the broader economic growth of the state and nation. Mahakumbh 2025 is poised to make a significant impact on Prayagraj and its neighboring regions, fostering new business and job opportunities.
