China is experiencing widespread panic and overwhelmed hospitals due to the circulation of a virus known as HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus).
Now, the Union Health Ministry said the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has detected HMPV infection in two children in Karnataka. Infection has been found in a three-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy. After receiving the case, the Health Minister of Karnataka has called an emergency meeting.
According to the ministry, a three-month-old girl was admitted to Bangalore's Baptist Hospital for bronchopneumonia treatment. She was diagnosed with HMPV but has since been discharged.
A baby, aged eight months, was also diagnosed with the infection at the same hospital. His sample was collected on January 3, 2025. The child's health is stable. Neither the infected children nor their family members have any record of international travel.
At the same time, the government of Andhra Pradesh has issued an alert regarding the HMPV virus. K Padmavati, the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare in Andhra Pradesh, mentioned that this virus spreads from person to person like COVID-19. However, there have been no reported cases of HMPV in Andhra Pradesh.
Discovered in 2001, HPMV is an RNA virus known to cause seasonal infections in young children and the elderly, particularly during the winter season.
Studies show that HMPV accounts for about 10% to 12% of respiratory illnesses in children. Although most cases are mild, approximately 5% to 16% of the affected children might develop a more severe lower respiratory tract infection, like pneumonia.
Symptoms commonly associated with HMPV include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. These are also the symptoms shown by people infected with the COVID-19 virus.
At present, there is no vaccine available, and antiviral treatment is not advised. However, individuals can reduce the transmission of HMPV and other respiratory viruses by adhering to these measures:
Frequently wash your hands with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds.
Refrain from touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with hands that haven't been washed.
Steer clear of individuals who are unwell.
Individuals exhibiting cold symptoms should cover their mouth and nose when they cough or sneeze.
Refrain from using the same cups and eating utensils as others.
