Ex-Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night after a prolonged illness. He was taken to Delhi AIIMS late Thursday night due to a decline in his health.
He was receiving medical care in the emergency room. While undergoing treatment, he passed away at the age of 92. After Manmohan Singh's death, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted a touching message on the social media platform X.
He said, "Manmohan Singh Ji led India with immense wisdom and integrity. His humility and deep understanding of economics inspired the nation. My heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Kaur and the family. I have lost a mentor and guide. Millions of us who admired him will remember him with the utmost pride."
In 1991, India faced a severe economic crisis, during which Dr. Manmohan Singh was appointed as the Finance Minister. He introduced landmark economic reforms that set India on the course of economic liberalization. Dr. Manmohan Singh served as India's Finance Minister between 1991 and 1996.
During this period, he introduced a thorough policy of economic reforms, which gained global recognition. These reforms provided India with a new path, helping it overcome the economic crisis. Dr. Manmohan Singh first joined the Rajya Sabha in 1991. Dr. Singh served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004, during the Bharatiya Janata Party's tenure in power.
Dr. Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister of India for the first time in 2004 and took the oath for his second term in 2009. Dr. Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India for two consecutive terms until 2014. He was the inaugural Prime Minister who did not secure a victory in the Lok Sabha elections and served as a Rajya Sabha member. His tenure was marked by a strong focus on economic growth and social planning.
