On Thursday, Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy inaugurated the 11th round of commercial coal mine auctions in New Delhi, offering a total of 27 coal blocks.
These blocks are located across Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh, and include both fully and partially explored mines, as well as a coking coal mine, according to a press release from the Ministry of Coal.
The ministry has signed nine agreements with the winners of the 10th auction round.
According to the release, once these mines are operational, they will generate an annual revenue of Rs 1,446 crore based on their PRC and create approximately 19,000 jobs.
The Ministry of Coal has implemented various reforms to ensure significant growth in the coal sector to meet the nation's energy demands.
In the 11th round, mines located in protected areas, wildlife sanctuaries, key habitats, regions with over 40 percent forest cover, and densely built-up areas have been excluded.
Additionally, the boundaries of several coal blocks have been adjusted to increase their appeal, particularly in areas with high population density, extensive greenery, or essential infrastructure, according to the release.
Speaking to the audience, Union Minister of Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy stressed that coal is fundamental to India's energy sector, stating that power generation is inconceivable without it.
He pointed out the significant impact of coal block auctions in securing energy, fostering self-reliance, and cutting down on imports.
Encouraging industry stakeholders to actively engage in the 11th round of auctions, he urged for a collective effort to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of an energy-independent, self-reliant India.
Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced reforms in the coal sector. In this fiscal year, we anticipate producing 1080 MT of coal.
Some steel companies are currently using imported coal, and we are urging them to switch to domestic coal. Our objective is to utilize coal produced within the country.
Union Minister Reddy reiterated the government's dedication to increasing domestic coal production to fulfill the nation's energy needs.
The minister reaffirmed the government's dedication to the betterment of local communities, highlighting that coal auctions and mining activities extend beyond economic progress.
These initiatives also seek to empower communities by generating jobs, enhancing infrastructure, and advancing education and healthcare in coal mining regions.
Reddy conveyed optimism that these reforms will position India as a global frontrunner in sustainable mining practices while guaranteeing energy security.
