The weather forecast released by the Regional Meteorological Centre predicted "heavy to very heavy" rainfall at isolated places in Chennai on Sunday.
Rough sea conditions were observed on Chennai beaches, including Marina, Pattinapakkam and Elliott Beach. Due to strong winds, the beach sand came on the Pattinapakkam beach road due to high tide.
Employees of the Greater Chennai Corporation cleared sand from the Pattinapakkam beach road with the help of JCB. According to the India Meteorological Department, wind speed reached 70-80 kmph to 90 kmph in coastal districts of north Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh.
"The wind speed is very likely to decrease from the night of November 30 and the wind speed will increase from 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph from December 1 morning and decrease gradually thereafter," the bulletin issued by the IMD said. "
"Heavy to very heavy rainfall" is likely at isolated places over North Tamil Nadu today. The IMD had informed that wind speed would increase "70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph" along and off north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts.
"It is very likely to persist till the night of November 30 and gradually decrease thereafter," the IMD said in its national bulletin. The IMD has predicted "extremely heavy" rainfall in the Union Territory of Puducherry today and "moderate" rainfall on December 2.
Cyclone Fengal crossed Karaikal and Mahabalipuram coasts near Puducherry yesterday. The cyclone made landfall on the coast of the Union Territory on Saturday.
The IMD wrote on X, "Cyclonic storm Fhengal crossed the coasts of North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry near Puducherry near latitude 12.05 degree north and longitude 79.9 degree east yesterday between 2230 hrs IST to 2330 hrs IST moving at a speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph.
" It lay centred over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry near latitude 12.0 degree north and longitude 79.8 degree east near Puducherry at 2330 hrs IST yesterday, November 30.
It will continue to move slowly west-southwestwards and weaken gradually into a deep depression during next 3 hours. Meanwhile, people living in nearby areas have been shifted to relief camps near Kalpakkam in Chengalpattu district in the wake of cyclone Fengle.
