Delhi Weather: The air quality in Delhi deteriorated further on Monday morning and a thick blanket of smog enveloped many areas. Air quality levels dropped to 'severe plus' levels. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the air quality index (AQI) in the national capital stood at 483 at 7 am.
Toxic foam was seen floating on the Yamuna river in Kalindi Kunj, residents complained of difficulty in breathing and burning in the eyes. A local resident said, "I have been living here for 20 years... This (air pollution) causes irritation in the eyes, difficulty in breathing, cough and cold. There is a lot of pollution here. Water is also polluted... Now we are used to it. But no new person will be able to stay here, he will immediately fall ill. Movement of trains continued amid smog in Delhi.
The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) issued a notice, "The process of low visibility at Delhi Airport is underway. All flight operations are currently normal. Passengers are requested to contact the concerned airline for updated flight information. In Agra, a thick layer of smog enveloped the Taj Mahal amid a rise in air pollution levels. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the air quality in Agra continues to remain in the 'poor' category. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Sunday announced that physical classes will be closed for all students except classes 10 and 12.
The announcement came soon after the implementation of GRAP-4 in Delhi-NCR from Monday. In a post on X, CM Atishi wrote, "With the implementation of GRAP-4 from tomorrow, physical classes will be closed for all students except classes 10 and 12. All schools will conduct online classes until further orders," he said. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai will hold a meeting with heads of all concerned departments on Monday for effective implementation of GRAP IV, his office said in a statement on Sunday.
"Keeping in view the current trend of deterioration of air quality in NCR, and in an effort to prevent further deterioration in air quality in the region, the Sub-Committee has today decided to implement all actions envisaged under Phase-IV of GRAP - 'Severe+' Air Quality (AQI> 450 of Delhi) applicable to the entire NCR from 08:00 AM on 18.11.2024 (tomorrow), The CAQM said in a statement.
