Best internationally to reflect the importance of High Courts
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud inaugurated the National Judicial Museum and Archives (NJMA) at the Supreme Court in New Delhi on Thursday. Several other Supreme Court judges were present at the event. During his speech at the inauguration, Chandrachud emphasized the significance of judicial institutions in delivering justice and safeguarding citizens' fundamental rights. He mentioned, 'It took about one and a half years to conceptualize and plan this project, and around six months for its actual execution. This has been achieved in record time. We aimed to create not just a museum of artefacts, but the best international museum to highlight the importance of our institution and High Courts in providing justice and protecting the fundamental rights of our citizens.'
Importance of the Court in the Life of the Nation
Judge Chandrachud mentioned that the museum's designers were also responsible for creating the Prime Minister's Museum at Teen Murti Bhawan and praised their work. He noted that the team behind the museum was forward-thinking and understood his vision. With experience from designing the Prime Minister's Museum, they were adept at producing a world-class modern museum. He emphasized that the museum symbolizes the significance of the Court in the nation's life and dedicated it to the country, highlighting the values of the Supreme Court and its crucial role in national life.
Justice Chandrachud, the 50th Chief Justice of India, is set to retire on November 10.
I am pleased to dedicate this museum to the nation on behalf of all my colleagues, envisioning it as an engaging space for the younger generation. Deputy Justice Chandrachud, the 50th Chief Justice of India, is set to retire on November 10. On October 24, the Centre announced that Justice Sanjiv Khanna would succeed him.
