India's Coal Production
According to the Ministry of Coal, coal production in the country has increased significantly during the financial year 2024-25. Despite facing adverse climatic conditions that hampered mining operations, the ministry said the sector has shown remarkable resilience, and achieved significant production milestones.
India's coal production rises 5.85%
According to ministry data on Friday, production reached a total of 411.62 million tonnes (MT) as of September 12, 2024. This shows an impressive rise from 388.86 MT produced during the same period last year, reflecting a growth rate of 5.85 per cent.
CIL also contributed to this growth
Coal major Coal India Limited (CIL) has also contributed to this growth. CIL's production increased to 311 MT during FY 2024-25 as against 302.53 MT during the same period last year, registering a growth rate of 2.80 per cent. "This shows a significant increase from 388.86 MT produced during the same period last year, registering a commendable growth rate of 5.85% despite adverse climatic conditions challenging mining operations," the ministry said. Apart from the increase in production, the ministry said there has also been a significant improvement in coal dispatch.
4.97 per cent rise from 421.29 MT
According to the data, during FY 2024-25, as on September 12, coal dispatch reached 442.24 MT, registering a growth of 4.97 per cent from 421.29 MT dispatched during the same period last year. According to the ministry, this upward trend is particularly evident in coal supplied to power plants, which witnessed a growth of 4.03 per cent, to 362.65 MT.
The vital importance of the coal industry
This highlights the crucial role of the coal sector in meeting India's growing energy demands and its commitment to ensure uninterrupted power supply. As on September 12, 2024, coal stocks with coal companies rose to 76.49 MT, registering a remarkable 49.07 per cent growth over last year.
Similarly, domestic coal-based thermal power plants reported coal stock of 36.58 MT, showing a growth of 43.68 per cent. "These figures clearly reflect the resilience and dedication of the coal sector in furthering the energy security of the country," the ministry said.
