Iran-Israel Ceasefire: Fragile Peace or Temporary Pause?

Aditya Chopra

The only alternative and answer to every war is peace. The deadly war that was going on between Iran and Israel in Central Asia for the last 12 days, now seems to be counting its breath in the form of a ceasefire, but only the ceasefire will pave the way for peace. US President Donald Trump was playing a major role in brokering a ceasefire between the two countries. However, Iran and Israel continued to attack each other even after the ceasefire was announced. Donald Trump used his influence to stop Israel from carrying out attacks. However, two days ago, he himself attacked Iran's nuclear bases. Still, their cease-fire efforts should not be ignored. Prior to the ceasefire, the way Iran attacked the US military base in Qatar, another country in Central Asia, it seemed that the war would flare up further, but President Trump had announced that there would be no response to this attack. Qatar is home to the largest US military base in Central Asia, with 10,000 troops stationed. There was no loss of life or property in Qatar in the Iranian attack.

The base also serves as the headquarters and logistics center for US military operations in Iraq. It also has the longest air landing strip in the Gulf region. The British Army also uses this base from time to time. Al Udayd is also known as Abu Nakla Airport. Qatar allowed the US to use this base in the year 2000. In 2001, the United States took over its operations. This was followed by an agreement between Qatar and the United States in December 2002, in which the US military presence was formally recognized. Iran had promised to respond to the US attack on its nuclear bases on Saturday and now it has done so. All Iranian missiles fired at a US base in Qatar were destroyed and there were no American casualties. Trump felt that if the war was prolonged, America could also suffer.

Now Donald Trump has claimed that all parties have agreed to a ceasefire and he hopes that it will lead to an official end to the conflict, but many questions remain. The question facing the United States and Israel in particular is what they have gained from this war. Israel added a change of guard in Tehran to its war target just a day after the fighting began. Israeli PM Netanyahu asked the Iranian people to come out on the streets against his government, while Donald Trump also indicated that the US wants to overthrow Ali Khamenei's regime from Tehran. On the ground in Tehran, it was in contrast to appeals from Israel and the United States. People in Tehran took to the streets to show their solidarity with Ali Khamenei in the difficult time of the war. During this time, pictures of Khamenei and military officers killed in Israeli attacks were seen in the hands of many people. It is clear that this war in Tehran has strengthened Khamenei's grip rather than weakened it. After the 12-day war, it is very clear that the US and Israel together have only been able to push back Iran's nuclear program. The United States and Israel have not been able to succeed in completely destroying Iran's nuclear program and removing Khamenei from power. That is, America and Israel have not been successful in achieving both their major goals. America's ongoing nuclear talks with Iran have soured due to this war. Now it will not be easy to persuade Iran on this again. On the other hand, in large parts of the world, Israel and the US have been criticized for starting a war by attacking first. Trump's image has taken a hit because he has been constantly talking against war and wants the Nobel Peace Prize for himself.

Iran has been a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty or NPT since 1968. The International Atomic Energy Agency can monitor its nuclear activities. Israel, despite being a nuclear power, is not a member of the NPT. That is, in a way, a 'thief' has become a judge and a soldier. However, no one won or lost in the 12-day war. All three are claiming to achieve the goal in this fight. A ceasefire will only be considered if Iran and Israel sincerely abide by the agreement and stop attacking each other. There is a need for innovation in war-torn areas of the world. Relief needs to be brought to the stricken humanity. It would be better if Israel and Iran implement a permanent ceasefire.
