During the 2025-26 rabi marketing season, which spans from April to June, the government has acquired over 29.7 million tonnes of wheat. Official reports indicate that this is the largest procurement since the 2021-22 season.
According to the Food Corporation of India (FCI), wheat procurement this year is 13.5% higher than the same period last year and is nearing completion in most major producing states. Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi anticipates that due to this year's record harvest, the total wheat procurement will reach between 320 and 325 lakh tonnes.
In the 2024-25 period, wheat procurement reached 26.59 million tonnes. The minister announced that the government aims to procure 312 lakh tonnes of wheat for the 2025-26 marketing year. FCI data reveals that the five major wheat-procuring states—Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh—have increased their wheat procurement this year compared to the previous year. The data indicates that approximately Rs 62,346.23 crore has been disbursed as the minimum support price (MSP), benefiting 2.27 million farmers.
