India's smartphone exports to the United States have increased five times over the past three years, while exports to Japan have quadrupled, as per government data. Consequently, the current smartphone exports have surpassed the country's exports of petroleum products and diamonds. The data reveals that smartphone exports rose by 55 percent, reaching $24.14 billion in 2024-25, compared to $15.57 billion in 2023-24 and $10.96 billion in 2022-23.
Growth in smartphone exports
In the last financial year, the United States, the Netherlands, Italy, Japan, and the Czech Republic were the leading countries with the most significant rise in smartphone exports. Exports to the US reached $10.6 billion in 2024-25, up from $2.16 billion in 2022-23 and $5.57 billion in 2023-24. Similarly, exports to Japan saw a substantial increase, growing from $120 million in 2022-23 to $520 million in 2024-25.
Smartphones are India's most exported product
"With this boom, the smartphone has become India's most exported product," a commerce ministry official said. It has overtaken petroleum products and diamonds for the first time. The official said that there has been a huge boom in this sector in the last three years, which has turned the country into a major global manufacturing and consumer hub. He said that the production-linked incentive PLI scheme has contributed significantly to this growth.
